G Major: A Friendly Key to Start With

The G major scale has one sharp, F#, and the notes G, A, B, C, D, E and F#. It is a popular first key on guitar because the open G string is the root and the open B and D strings also belong to it.

For the lowest box, put the root on the 3rd fret of the low E string; the A string root is up at the 10th fret. E minor shares the notes. Hearing the scale inside real music helps, so see songs built on these scales.

How the major scale is built:

The major scale is built from the degrees 1 2 3 4 5 6 7, which gives the step pattern W-W-H-W-W-W-H (W = whole step, H = half step).

Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11. That makes it a 7-note scale.

It is the parent scale of its own modal family.

It is also known as Ionian.
