Playing C Lydian from the 8th Fret

C, D, E, F#, G, A and B spell the C Lydian scale. It looks like C major with one change, F# in place of F, and that raised 4th puts a tritone above the tonic.

There is no open string to help in this key, so learn the shapes from the root on the 8th fret of the low E string, or the 3rd fret of the A string. The seven notes also make up G major. A three notes per string exercise is a good way to learn the layout.

How the lydian scale is built:

The lydian scale is built from the degrees 1 2 3 #4 5 6 7, which gives the step pattern W-W-W-H-W-W-H (W = whole step, H = half step).

Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11. That makes it a 7-note scale.

It is mode 4 of the Major Scale, so both scales share the same notes from a different starting point.
