E Melodic Minor: Open Position and Beyond

E, F#, G, A, B, C# and D# spell the E melodic minor scale. Open low E and open high E ring the root, while C# and D# are the two raised notes that distinguish it from E natural minor.

Higher up the neck, the root returns on the 7th fret of the A string. The 4th degree gives the dominant seventh A7, an unusual feature in a minor scale. For help with the stretches, check scale fingering.

How the melodic minor scale is built:

The melodic minor scale is built from the degrees 1 2 b3 4 5 6 7, which gives the step pattern W-H-W-W-W-W-H (W = whole step, H = half step).

Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11. That makes it a 7-note scale.

It is the parent scale of its own modal family.

It is also known as Jazz Minor.
