Ab Whole Tone Scale Patterns
No half step appears anywhere in the Ab whole tone scale: Ab, Bb, C, D, E and Gb. That is why it has no leading tone and never quite resolves, a quality that suits dreamy passages.
The root is on the 4th fret of the low E string and the 11th fret of the A string. C, D, E, F# and Bb whole tone scales use these same pitches, so one fingering serves six starting points.

Structure
Ab whole-tone scale notes:
How the whole-tone scale is built:
The whole-tone scale is built from the degrees 1 2 3 #4 #5 b7, which gives the step pattern W-W-W-W-W-W (W = whole step, H = half step).
Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. That makes it a 6-note scale.
