Getting Started with G Minor Pentatonic

G, Bb, C, D and F are the five notes of the G minor pentatonic scale. The first box starts on the 3rd fret of the low E string, and the open G string gives you the same root one octave higher.

Bb is the flat third, the note that makes this scale sound minor. Bb major pentatonic has identical notes, so a single fingering covers two keys. To hear how that note behaves against different chords, work through the chord tone exercises for blues.

How the minor pentatonic scale is built:

The minor pentatonic scale is built from the degrees 1 b3 4 5 b7, which gives the step pattern W+H-W-W-W+H-W (W = whole step, H = half step).

Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 3, 5, 7, 10. That makes it a 5-note scale.
